The Church of Ireland cathedral occupies the traditional site of Saint Patrick's own church, though the present building is substantially a medieval structure heavily restored and remodeled in the nineteenth century, including its spire and much of its exterior stonework. It is owned and administered by the Church of Ireland as the seat of the Archbishop of Armagh. The cathedral remains an active place of worship, open to visitors outside of services.

St Patrick's Cathedral traces its origin to a church traditionally founded by Saint Patrick around the fifth century on the hill of Armagh. Rebuilt repeatedly after fires and warfare, it symbolized Armagh's status as Ireland's chief Christian seat.
