HISTORIC PRESERVATION at St Michan's Church.

The medieval church retains its tower and vaults, most notably the crypt whose dry limestone conditions have preserved a number of mummified remains in open caskets, though the main church building was substantially rebuilt in later centuries. It is a Church of Ireland parish church. The crypt is open to the public by guided tour, separate from the church above, which functions as a place of worship.

About St Michan's Church

St Michan's Church was founded in 1095 by the Hiberno-Norse community of Dublin and dedicated to a Danish saint, serving parishioners north of the River Liffey. The medieval structure was largely rebuilt in the seventeenth century. Its limestone vaults naturally preserved burials, and tradition holds that Handel rehearsed on its organ before the premiere of Messiah.
