HISTORIC PRESERVATION at St Mawes Castle.
The Henrician artillery fort survives remarkably intact, its distinctive clover-leaf plan of rounded gun bastions and central keep standing largely as original Tudor fabric rather than later reconstruction, with little of its original form lost. It is managed by English Heritage as a scheduled monument and one of a chain of coastal artillery forts. The castle is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About St Mawes Castle
Henry VIII had St Mawes Castle built around 1540 as one of his Device Forts, coastal artillery defenses guarding the Carrick Roads estuary against French and Spanish invasion. It was built with a clover-leaf plan of rounded gun platforms, paired with Pendennis Castle across the water. The garrison surrendered without a fight during the English Civil War in 1646.
