St Magnus Cathedral survives as a substantially complete Romanesque and Gothic red and yellow sandstone building, including its original nave, choir, and tower, with the structure remaining largely intact from its medieval construction and later additions. It is owned by the local community through the Orkney Islands Council rather than the Church of Scotland. It remains an active place of worship and is freely open to visitors.
About St Magnus Cathedral
St Magnus Cathedral was founded in 1137 by Earl Rognvald Kolsson of Orkney, dedicated to his martyred uncle, Magnus Erlendsson, whose relics it enshrined. Built in Romanesque style, it served as the seat of the Norse bishopric of Orkney and took centuries to complete. The cathedral stood as the religious and political center of the Norse earldom.
