HISTORIC PRESERVATION at St James' House.

The original eighteenth-century frame house survives in Fredericksburg as a periodically opened historic museum. Washington Heritage Museums preserves its furnished rooms, decorative arts collection, gardens, and architectural fabric, presenting the domestic setting of a prosperous early-nineteenth-century household within the city’s historic district.

About St James' House

The house was originally home to James Mercer, an attorney, a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, first judge of the General Court in Fredericksburg, and the attorney who drew up the will for Mary Washington.

HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at St James' House

Mercer built the house on land once owned by Fielding Lewis, brother-in-law of George Washington.
