St Andrews Castle developed as the principal residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews, leaders of Scotland's most important medieval diocese. A fortified episcopal complex existed by the thirteenth century on cliffs overlooking the North Sea. The Wars of Scottish Independence brought repeated capture, destruction, and rebuilding as English and Scottish forces contested the town. Halls, chambers, chapel, kitchen, towers, curtain walls, and sea gate combined ecclesiastical government and elite residence with the defenses expected at a politically exposed center.

Later bishops rebuilt the castle as both palace and fortress. The office brought wealth, legal authority, diplomacy, and influence over the university and church. Within the walls, clerks, chaplains, servants, guards, guests, and prisoners supported a household whose religious and political functions were inseparable. The rock-cut chamber known as the bottle dungeon became a secure prison. Its grim form reflects the castle's role in enforcing authority, although individual stories attached to it are not always documented with certainty.

The Reformation crisis made St Andrews Castle a center of violence. Cardinal David Beaton imprisoned the Protestant preacher George Wishart, who was executed outside the castle in 1546. A group of Protestant lairds soon entered the fortress and murdered Beaton. They then occupied the castle, creating a reforming stronghold and receiving supporters including John Knox. The siege that followed connected Scottish religious conflict with English and French intervention during the wider wars of the 1540s.

Besiegers dug a mine beneath the walls, while defenders created a countermine to intercept it. The surviving passages preserve a rare physical record of underground siege warfare. In 1547 French ships and troops bombarded the castle, forced surrender, and carried prominent defenders away as prisoners. Later archbishops repaired parts of the complex, but the Reformation abolished the political system that had sustained an episcopal fortress. Buildings were quarried, adapted, or abandoned as St Andrews changed.

The ruins entered public guardianship and have been stabilized through archaeological and masonry conservation. The mine and countermine, bottle dungeon, sea-facing walls, and foundations allow the castle's most intense sixteenth-century episodes to be understood in place. Yet its history is broader than martyrdom and siege. St Andrews Castle records the worldly power of medieval bishops, international war, imprisonment, household life, the institutional upheaval of the Reformation, and the later process by which a dismantled seat of authority became a public monument to conflicts that helped reshape modern Scotland profoundly thereafter.
