HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Spoleto.
The Rocca Albornoziana survives largely intact, including its two internal courtyards, the Cortile d'Onore and Cortile delle Armi, along with its towers and perimeter walls, restored after decades of use as a prison. It is owned by the Italian state and houses the Museo Nazionale del Ducato di Spoleto. The fortress is open to the public as a ticketed museum.
About Spoleto
Spoleto served as the capital of a Lombard duchy from the sixth century and later became a fortified medieval commune under papal and imperial authority. In 1155, forces of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa sacked the city during his Italian campaign. It remained a strategic hill town controlling routes through Umbria between Rome and the north.
