HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Souq Waqif.
Souq Waqif preserves its traditional wind-tower buildings, mud-rendered facades, and narrow lanes, largely rebuilt and restored using traditional materials and methods after decades of decline. It is managed under the authority of Qatar's government heritage and tourism bodies. The souq functions as an active commercial district, freely and openly accessible to the public.
About Souq Waqif
Souq Waqif developed in the early twentieth century as Doha's principal marketplace, where Bedouin traders came from the desert interior to exchange livestock and wool along the Wadi Musheireb. Its name, meaning the standing market, referred to vendors who set up along the dry riverbed. The souq served as the commercial heart of the growing pearling town.
