The neoclassical building retains its quadrangle, riverside terrace, and principal facades largely as designed by William Chambers in the eighteenth century, having been adapted over time from government offices to its present cultural use. It is owned by the UK government and managed by the Somerset House Trust. The courtyard and terrace are freely accessible, while galleries and exhibitions within the building are generally ticketed.
About Somerset House
The first Somerset House was built in the mid-sixteenth century as a Renaissance palace for Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset, and later passed to the Crown. It was demolished and replaced between 1776 and 1801 by a neoclassical complex designed by William Chambers to house government offices. It also hosted the Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal Society.
