The site preserves a long colonnaded Roman street with rows of granite columns, many of them re-erected rather than found standing, along with scattered foundations of a theater and other structures. It lies within an archaeological park administered by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The park is open to the public as a ticketed archaeological site.
About Soli-Pompeiopolis, near Mersin, Turkey
Soli was founded as a Greek colony on the Cilician coast, traditionally settled by colonists from Rhodes and Argos. After Pompey the Great resettled defeated Cilician pirates there in the first century BCE, the city was renamed Pompeiopolis in his honor. It flourished as a trade port under Roman rule, known for its colonnaded street to the harbor.
