HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Smailholm Tower.

The tower survives largely intact as a four-story rubble-built peel tower enclosed by a barmkin wall, though the farmstead buildings once attached to it are gone. It is a scheduled monument in the care of Historic Environment Scotland. It is open to visitors on a seasonal, ticketed basis, with the interior accessible via internal stairs.

About Smailholm Tower

The Pringle family built Smailholm Tower in the Scottish Borders in the fifteenth century as a fortified tower house against English raids during centuries of border warfare. Its elevated position allowed watch over the surrounding countryside against Border reivers and invading armies. The tower later inspired the young Walter Scott, who spent childhood time nearby.
