HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Sligo Abbey.

The ruins preserve much of the medieval Augustinian abbey complex, including the church, tower, cloister arcade, and domestic ranges, standing as roofless stone remains. The site is a national monument in state care, managed by the Office of Public Works. It is open to the public, generally freely accessible or with modest supervision.

About Sligo Abbey

Sligo Abbey was founded around 1252 by the Anglo-Norman lord Maurice FitzGerald as a friary for the Dominican order. It suffered a serious fire in the fifteenth century and was subsequently rebuilt. The abbey was sacked during the Irish Confederate Wars in the seventeenth century, after which conventual life there ended.
