Sillustani preserves a cluster of pre-Inca and Inca chullpas, cylindrical funerary towers built of fitted stone, standing on a peninsula above Lake Umayo, some collapsed or partially ruined. The site is administered by Peru's Ministry of Culture. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis, typically visited with a guide.
About Sillustani Funerary Towers
Sillustani's funerary towers, known as chullpas, were built beginning around the thirteenth century by the Colla people, an Aymara-speaking group who preceded and later came under Inca rule. The cylindrical stone towers served as burial chambers for nobles and their families, arranged around the shores of Lake Umayo. They reflect Andean mortuary traditions spanning pre-Inca and Inca periods.
