La Lonja de la Seda preserves its Gothic Sala de Contratación with spiraling columns, the Consulado del Mar tower, and an orange tree courtyard, essentially intact as built. It is a World Heritage Site owned and managed by the Valencia city council. The building is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Silk Exchange (La Lonja de la Seda)
The Silk Exchange was built in the late fifteenth century as a commodities market during Valencia's rise as a Mediterranean trading power. It housed the Consulate of the Sea, a maritime trade tribunal, and its great hall was used for silk and produce trading. The building symbolized the city's mercantile wealth and Gothic civic architecture.
