HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Silbury Hill, Wiltshire.

The mound survives as the largest artificial prehistoric earthwork in Europe, a stepped chalk and turf structure raised in several Neolithic phases, with no evidence of an above-ground building or burial chamber. It is a scheduled monument in the care of English Heritage and forms part of the Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites World Heritage Site. Visitors may view the hill from a nearby path and layby, but climbing it is not permitted.

About Silbury Hill, Wiltshire

Silbury Hill was built in stages by Neolithic communities around 2400 BCE, making it the largest artificial prehistoric mound in Europe. It stands near the Avebury henge complex, with which it likely formed part of a wider ceremonial landscape. Its original purpose remains uncertain, though its scale suggests a monument of considerable communal importance.
