HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Shivta National Park.
Shivta preserves extensive ruins of a Byzantine-era town built almost entirely of local limestone, including three churches, residential quarters, and remains of a water-collection and cistern system, with walls standing to varying heights amid largely unreconstructed ruins. It is managed by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and forms part of the Incense Route Desert Cities World Heritage Site. The site lies in open desert ground and is freely accessible.
About Shivta National Park
Nabatean traders founded Shivta around the first century CE as a way station in the Negev, later developing under Byzantine rule into a farming town with three churches. It relied on advanced water-collection and terrace agriculture to sustain vineyards and orchards in the desert. Shivta formed part of the Incense Route network linking Arabia to Mediterranean ports.
