HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a purpose-built structure completed in the early twenty-first century, featuring white marble domes and minarets, extensive floral marble inlay, one of the world's largest hand-knotted carpets, and a large central chandelier. It is owned and administered by the government of the United Arab Emirates. The mosque is open to visitors of all faiths free of charge outside of prayer times, subject to a modest dress code.
About Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE's founding president, commissioned this mosque in the late twentieth century as a national place of worship and a symbol of Islamic architecture. Construction drew on craftsmen and materials from many countries and continued after his death. It became the country's principal mosque for Friday prayer and major religious gatherings.
