HISTORIC PRESERVATION at SGang Gwaay Llnagaay (Nan Sdins).
The site preserves the remains of a Haida village, including numerous standing mortuary and memorial totem poles and the collapsed cedar remains of longhouses, left to weather naturally rather than being restored. It is a World Heritage Site jointly managed by the Haida Nation and Parks Canada as part of Gwaii Haanas. Access is by guided visit only, under the Haida Watchmen program.
About SGang Gwaay Llnagaay (Nan Sdins)
SGang Gwaay Llnagaay, also known as Nan Sdins, was a Haida village on Anthony Island in Haida Gwaii, occupied for generations by a Haida community. Its longhouses and carved mortuary and memorial poles commemorated chiefly lineages and family histories. Smallpox devastated the population, and survivors abandoned the village in the late nineteenth century, leaving a major record of Haida art.
