HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Sewell Mining Town.
The steep hillside town of brightly painted wooden houses, staircases, a theater, and company buildings built around the El Teniente copper mine survives largely intact as an example of early-twentieth-century company-town planning, though it has stood unoccupied since the mine's workers were relocated. It is owned by Codelco, the Chilean state copper company, and is a World Heritage Site. Access is by guided tour only, arranged through organized excursions rather than independent visits.
About Sewell Mining Town
Sewell was built by the Braden Copper Company beginning in 1905 as a company town housing workers for the nearby El Teniente copper mine high in the Andes. Its houses were built in tiers along the steep mountainside, with no streets for vehicles. The town supported one of the world's largest underground copper mines through much of the twentieth century.
