HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Seville Heritage Park.
The site preserves archaeological remains of Taino, Spanish, and English occupation, including the ruins of a sixteenth century Spanish settlement and the Seville Great House, a restored plantation era building housing exhibits. It is managed by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust as a protected heritage site. The grounds are open to the public on a ticketed basis, with guided tours available.
About Seville Heritage Park
Spanish colonists under Juan de Esquivel founded Sevilla la Nueva around 1509 as the first Spanish capital of Jamaica, on land earlier inhabited by the Taino. Disease and unhealthy swampy conditions led the Spanish to abandon the town for Spanish Town by the 1530s. The site later became an English sugar plantation.
