HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Serjilla.

The site preserves an unusually complete abandoned Byzantine era village, including stone houses, a bathhouse, olive presses, tombs, and a small church, all standing ruins rather than reconstructions, in one of the best-preserved of the so-called Dead Cities. It forms part of the Ancient Villages of Northern Syria World Heritage Site and falls under the nominal authority of Syria's Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums. The ruins lie in open ground and are freely accessible to visitors.

About Serjilla

Serjilla was a prosperous farming village in northern Syria's Limestone Massif, built during the Byzantine era as one of the Dead Cities. Its economy relied on olive oil and wine production, attested by surviving villas, baths, and presses, before the settlement was abandoned in the early medieval period. It exemplifies the rural prosperity that supplied Mediterranean trade in Byzantine Syria.
