Serbin functioned as the religious, cultural, and social center of the Wendish (Sorbian) immigrant community in Texas, founded in 1854 when several hundred Wends from Lusatia, in present-day Germany, settled the site under the leadership of Pastor John Kilian. At its core, St. Paul Lutheran Church operated as the spiritual anchor of the settlement, organized as the first congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in Texas; the church and its adjoining school served not only worship but the everyday civic life of the community, hosting synodical conventions and functioning as the hub around which Wendish language, customs, and identity were preserved in a new country. The settlement itself functioned as a small agricultural community and trade point, though when the railroad bypassed Serbin by about two miles in 1890, much of the commercial activity shifted to the nearby community of Northrup, leaving Serbin primarily a church-centered village rather than a commercial one. That religious function has persisted uninterrupted: St. Paul Lutheran Church remains an active parish today, continuing to serve a sizable congregation along with its parochial school, making it one of the longest continuously functioning Wendish institutions in the country. Adjacent to the church, the Texas Wendish Heritage Museum, established in 1980, functions as a heritage and educational site, preserving artifacts, archives, and historic structures that document Wendish immigrant life, so that Serbin today operates both as a living place of worship and as a heritage-tourism destination.
