Matthew Gaines, a formerly enslaved man who became a Texas state senator during Reconstruction, was a leading advocate for public education and played an important role in securing the funding that helped establish the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas under the federal Morrill Act. Texas A&M honored his legacy with a campus statue dedicated in 2021.
