HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Second Allied Siege Line.

Preserved earthworks and reconstructed features mark portions of the second Allied siege line at Yorktown. The National Park Service maintains trenches, artillery positions, interpretive markers, trails, and surrounding battlefield landscape, although erosion, later land use, and restoration have altered sections of the original works.

About Second Allied Siege Line

American and French troops dug the second allied siege line on October 11–12, 1781, advancing within roughly 360 yards of the British defenses at Yorktown. The closer parallel allowed allied artillery and assault troops to intensify pressure. Capturing Redoubts 9 and 10 completed the line and hastened Cornwallis’s surrender.
