HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Scanno.

Scanno preserves a largely medieval hill town fabric of narrow stone lanes, tall stone houses, and remnants of its old town walls and gates, with the historic core still inhabited. The town is managed by the local municipality. It is an active, freely accessible settlement rather than a fenced monument, with its streets and squares open to the public at all times.

About Scanno

Scanno developed as a fortified hill settlement in the Abruzzo Apennines during the medieval period, sheltering a farming and shepherding community on a defensible ridge. It grew as a stop along the tratturi, the seasonal sheep droving routes linking Abruzzo to Apulia. The town became known for its distinctive traditional dress and vernacular stone architecture.
