HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Sapelo Island (Reynolds Mansion & Gullah-Geechee heritage).
Surviving structures include the Reynolds Mansion, a restored early twentieth century house built over the remains of an earlier plantation house foundation, and the Gullah-Geechee community of Hog Hammock with its vernacular houses, church, and cemeteries. The island is owned by the State of Georgia and managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as part of the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve. Access is by ferry and largely limited to guided tours and scheduled visits.
About Sapelo Island (Reynolds Mansion & Gullah-Geechee heritage)
Planter Thomas Spalding established a plantation on Sapelo Island in the early nineteenth century, growing Sea Island cotton using enslaved labor. Their descendants formed the Gullah-Geechee community of Hog Hammock, preserving language, foodways, and craft traditions rooted in West Africa. R. J. Reynolds Jr. later acquired the island and built a mansion in the twentieth century.
