HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Santuario Italico.

The site preserves the stepped terraces and foundations of a monumental Samnite sanctuary complex, including a small theater built into the hillside, surviving as excavated stone ruins in open ground. It is in Italian state ownership as a protected archaeological area. The site is freely or lightly accessible to visitors.

About Santuario Italico

The sanctuary at Pietrabbondante served as the principal religious and political center of the Samnite Pentri tribe, with its theater-temple complex built mainly in the second century BCE. It hosted assemblies and religious ceremonies central to Samnite identity during the tribe's wars against Rome. The site declined after Rome's conquest of the Samnites and the Social War.
