HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Santuario della Fortuna Primigenia.

The sanctuary's massive terraced substructures, ramps, and vaulted galleries survive beneath and within the modern town of Palestrina, along with the circular temple foundation and the Palazzo Barberini, which occupies the sanctuary's uppermost terrace and displays its Nile mosaic. It is administered by Italy's Ministry of Culture. The archaeological remains and museum are open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Santuario della Fortuna Primigenia

The Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia at Palestrina was built in the second century BCE as a terraced complex dedicated to the goddess of fortune, incorporating an oracle. Its staircases and porticoes rose in tiers up the hillside above Praeneste, drawing pilgrims who sought divination through the casting of lots. It ranked among the largest religious sanctuaries of Roman Italy.
