HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Santo Domingo de Silos Monastery.

The monastery preserves its renowned Romanesque cloister with carved historiated capitals and relief panels as original medieval work, while the church itself was rebuilt in a neoclassical style in the eighteenth century, replacing the earlier Romanesque structure. It remains an active Benedictine monastery, home to a community of monks who also maintain its well known collection of Gregorian chant. The cloister is open to the public on a ticketed basis, while the church hosts regular services.

About Santo Domingo de Silos Monastery

Monks refounded and rebuilt an earlier Visigothic monastery at Silos as a Benedictine house in the eleventh century, under Saint Dominic. Its monks became renowned for chanting the Mozarabic and later Gregorian liturgy and for illuminating manuscripts. The monastery's Romanesque cloister made it a major center of monastic art in medieval Castile.
