HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Santa María la Real de Covadonga.
The basilica of Covadonga, a neo-Romanesque church built of pink limestone in the late nineteenth century, stands above the older Santa Cueva, a shrine built into the rock face housing a small chapel and the tombs traditionally associated with Pelayo, along with an adjacent bell tower. The sanctuary is administered by the Catholic Church, through the Cabildo of Covadonga, as an active place of pilgrimage and worship. It remains freely and openly accessible to visitors and pilgrims.
About Santa María la Real de Covadonga
Tradition credited the Christian forces of Pelayo with a foundational victory over Muslim forces here in 722, traditionally the start of the Reconquista. A cave shrine to the Virgin of Covadonga became a major pilgrimage site commemorating the battle. A basilica was built on the site in the late nineteenth century to commemorate this founding myth.
