HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Sanremo Old Town (La Pigna).

The old town preserves its medieval street plan of narrow spiraling lanes, stepped alleys, and stone archways climbing the hillside, along with the hilltop Santuario della Madonna della Costa, largely as original fabric rather than modern rebuilding. The neighborhood falls under the ownership and planning control of the Comune di Sanremo. It remains a freely accessible, inhabited quarter of the city, open to visitors on foot.

About Sanremo Old Town (La Pigna)

La Pigna, the old town of Sanremo, developed from around the eleventh century as a fortified hilltop settlement built to protect residents from raids by pirates. Its houses and narrow streets were arranged in tight concentric spirals climbing the hillside, giving the district its name, meaning pine cone. The layout reflected Ligurian defensive needs against seaborne attack.
