About Sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron
The Sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron in Attica served from the Archaic period as a cult center for the goddess Artemis Brauronia. Young Athenian girls performed the arkteia rite there, serving as arktoi, or little bears, before marriage. The sanctuary linked Athens to rural Attica and played a role in rituals marking female coming of age.
