HISTORIC PRESERVATION at San Pedro de la Roca Castle.
The fortress preserves its original bastioned stone ramparts, gun batteries, powder magazines, a moat, and the governor's residence, representing one of the most complete examples of Spanish colonial military architecture in the Caribbean, with no major elements known to be modern reconstruction. It is a World Heritage Site under the care of Cuba's national heritage and museum authorities. The castle is open to the public as a ticketed museum and archaeological site.
About San Pedro de la Roca Castle
Spanish colonial authorities built San Pedro de la Roca Castle above the entrance to Santiago de Cuba's harbor beginning in 1638, designed by the Italian military engineer Giovanni Battista Antonelli. Constructed to defend against pirate and privateer raids, it was damaged and repeatedly rebuilt over the following century. The fortress anchored Spain's Caribbean coastal defenses.
