HISTORIC PRESERVATION at San Miniato.

The medieval hilltop fortress survives principally as its reconstructed tower, the Torre di Federico II, since the original structure was largely destroyed in the twentieth century and rebuilt as a faithful reconstruction rather than an original standing structure, and parts of the surrounding walls also remain. The site, known as the Parco della Rocca, is owned by the municipality of San Miniato. It lies in open ground and is freely accessible to the public.

About San Miniato

San Miniato developed as a fortified hilltop settlement in Tuscany, with origins traced to the ninth or tenth century under Lombard rule. Its strategic position made it a seat of Holy Roman Emperors' representatives in Tuscany, giving rise to the name San Miniato al Tedesco. It served for centuries as an administrative post on routes linking northern and central Italy.
