HISTORIC PRESERVATION at San Cristóbal de La Laguna.

The historic center preserves its original unfortified colonial street grid along with churches including the Cathedral of La Laguna, several convents, and noble houses with stone facades and wooden balconies. It is a World Heritage Site under the protection of the municipal council and Spanish heritage authorities. As a living town, its streets and public buildings are freely accessible, though several convents remain active religious houses with limited public access.

About San Cristóbal de La Laguna

San Cristóbal de La Laguna was founded in 1496 by Alonso Fernández de Lugo as the first capital of Tenerife. It was laid out as an unwalled town on a grid plan, later used as a model for Spanish colonial towns in the Americas. It served as the island's political and religious center before Santa Cruz became capital.
