HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Saintes.

Roman Saintes preserves the Arch of Germanicus, an amphitheater retaining much of its seating tiers and arena wall, and remains of a bath complex, though the amphitheater's upper structures are largely gone. These monuments are protected as classified historic monuments, managed by the municipality with French national heritage oversight. They stand largely in open ground and are freely accessible to visitors.

About Saintes

Saintes originated as Mediolanum Santonum, a Roman town founded in the first century BCE as capital of the Santones people. It became a major regional center, marked by a monumental arch dedicated to Germanicus and a large amphitheater built for public spectacles. The city remained an important administrative hub through the Roman and early medieval periods.
