HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Saint-Pierre ruins (destroyed by Mont Pelée, 1902).
The site preserves the ruined stone shells of the theater, cathedral, and other town buildings destroyed in the 1902 eruption of Mont Pelée, left as roofless ruins rather than rebuilt, alongside a rebuilt modern town around them. Ownership rests with the commune of Saint-Pierre and the French state heritage authorities. The ruins are freely accessible within the town, standing in open ground alongside active streets.
About Saint-Pierre ruins (destroyed by Mont Pelée, 1902)
Saint-Pierre grew from the seventeenth century into Martinique's principal port and cultural capital, known for its theater, rum distilleries, and commerce. On May 8, 1902, the eruption of Mont Pelee destroyed the city almost instantly, killing tens of thousands in one of history's deadliest volcanic disasters. Only a handful of people survived.
