About Saint-Louis Island Historic Centre
Saint-Louis was founded in 1659 by French traders as a fortified post on the Senegal River, among the earliest French settlements in West Africa. It became a hub of the slave trade and gum arabic commerce, shaped by the Signare women of mixed heritage. It later served as capital of French West Africa and French Mauritania.
