HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy.
The site comprises the nine Sacri Monti complexes, each a network of chapels containing frescoes and life-size terracotta statuary groups climbing a wooded hill toward a sanctuary church, all built as original devotional structures rather than later reconstructions. The individual complexes are managed by a mix of dioceses, religious orders, and regional heritage bodies, collectively recognized as a World Heritage Site. The chapels and hillside paths are freely accessible to visitors, generally viewed from outside through grilles or windows.
About Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy
The Sacri Monti were built from the late fifteenth century onward as chapel complexes on hillsides in Piedmont and Lombardy, mostly by Franciscan friars. Each chapel used statues and frescoes to depict scenes from the life of Christ or of saints for pilgrims. The complexes served Counter-Reformation devotion by offering a substitute pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
