HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Sacra di San Michele.

The complex preserves its Romanesque-Gothic abbey church built atop the mountain summit, the monumental Stairway of the Dead, and substantial ruins of the medieval monastic buildings, some of which remain roofless. It is entrusted to the Rosminian Fathers, the Institute of Charity, and functions as an active religious site. The abbey is open to the public, largely on a ticketed basis with some areas accessible only on guided visits.

About Sacra di San Michele

The Sacra di San Michele was founded as a Benedictine abbey around the year 1000 on Monte Pirchiriano in Piedmont, dedicated to the Archangel Michael. It became a stop on pilgrimage routes between France and Rome and prospered under royal and papal patronage. Its community declined after the fifteenth century, and the abbey fell into neglect.
