HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Saadian Tombs.
The Saadian Tombs preserve their original sixteenth century mausoleum chambers, including the elaborately decorated Hall of the Twelve Columns with imported Carrara marble and carved cedar and stucco work, along with an associated garden of individual graves, largely intact original fabric rediscovered and restored after long sealing. They form part of the Marrakesh medina World Heritage Site and are protected by Moroccan heritage authorities. The tombs are open to the public on a ticketed basis with access via a narrow passage from the adjoining mosque.
About Saadian Tombs
The Saadian Tombs were built in the late sixteenth century as the royal necropolis of the Saadian dynasty, under Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur, beside the Kasbah Mosque in Marrakesh. They housed the remains of sultans, family members, and courtiers in richly decorated chambers. Sultan Moulay Ismail sealed the site, and it remained hidden until rediscovered in 1917.
