HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Sénanque Abbey.

The abbey preserves its Romanesque church, cloister, dormitory, and chapter house largely intact from their medieval construction, with comparatively little later alteration to the stonework. It remains home to a community of Cistercian monks who own and maintain the buildings. It is an active place of worship, open to visitors through guided tours and restricted during periods of monastic prayer and observance.

About Sénanque Abbey

Cistercian monks founded Sénanque Abbey in 1148 in a secluded valley near Gordes as a house of prayer and agricultural self-sufficiency. The community adhered to the strict Cistercian rule of manual labor and silence, cultivating the surrounding land including lavender fields. The abbey formed part of the Cistercian network that shaped rural life across Provence.
