About Ségou Historic Town
Segou developed as a Bamana settlement on the Niger River and became, by the early eighteenth century, the capital of the Bamana Empire under Mamari Coulibaly. It functioned as the empire's political and military hub for over a century. It later fell to Umarian Tukulor forces in 1861 and subsequently to French colonial rule.
