HISTORIC PRESERVATION at São Bento Monastery.

The Benedictine monastery church and attached abbey buildings survive, rebuilt in a Romanesque and Gothic revival style in the early twentieth century on the site of an earlier colonial-era church. It is maintained by the Benedictine Order of São Paulo. The church is an active place of worship freely open to visitors, with some monastic areas restricted.

About São Bento Monastery

Benedictine monks founded the Monastery of São Bento in São Paulo in 1598, making it one of the city's oldest religious institutions. The monks established a school there that educated generations of the city's elite. The monastery served as a center of Benedictine religious and intellectual life in colonial and imperial Brazil.
