The stone ruins at Loropeni are remains of a fortified enclosure built by an unidentified West African community, likely between the eleventh and nineteenth centuries, to protect a settlement and stored goods. The walled site lay along routes linked to the trans-Saharan gold trade connecting Akan goldfields to North Africa. Its builders and exact purpose remain uncertain and debated.
