HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Rufisque Historic Town.

The town retains a scattering of colonial era buildings, including former trading houses and civic structures, though much of its historic fabric has deteriorated or been altered by later development. It falls generally under the stewardship of Senegalese state and municipal authorities rather than a dedicated heritage body. The historic quarter is freely accessible as a functioning part of the modern town rather than a formal monument site.

About Rufisque Historic Town

Rufisque developed as a coastal trading town from the sixteenth century, serving as a hub for Atlantic commerce under Portuguese and later French interests. It became one of Senegal's four original communes and a major center of the groundnut trade in the nineteenth century. The town played a key role in the region's colonial commercial economy.
