HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Royal Monastery of Las Descalzas Reales.
The convent preserves its original sixteenth century cloisters, chapel, staircase, and an extensive collection of tapestries, paintings, and religious artworks donated by its royal and noble patrons. It remains an active convent of Poor Clare nuns and is administered by Patrimonio Nacional, the Spanish crown's heritage agency. It is open to visitors only by guided tour on a ticketed basis.
About Royal Monastery of Las Descalzas Reales
The Royal Monastery of Las Descalzas Reales was founded in 1559 by Joanna of Austria, daughter of Emperor Charles V, as a convent for Poor Clare nuns in Madrid. Many members of the Spanish royal family and nobility entered the convent, bringing rich dowries of art and relics. It became one of the wealthiest convents in sixteenth century Spain.
