The complex preserves its Gothic and Mudejar church, cloisters, and monastic buildings largely intact, along with important collections of religious art and vestments. It is a World Heritage Site administered by the Franciscan order, which maintains a community there. The church remains an active place of worship, while the monastic buildings and museum are open to the public on a guided or ticketed basis.
About Royal Monastery of Guadalupe
The Royal Monastery of Guadalupe grew from a shrine traditionally linked to a shepherd's fourteenth-century discovery of an image of the Virgin, and gained royal patronage after King Alfonso XI credited a battle victory to her intercession. It became a Hieronymite monastery and one of medieval Spain's foremost pilgrimage sites. Its cult later spread to the Americas following Spanish colonization.
