Rouen developed on the Seine as a Roman city, an early Christian bishopric, and one of medieval Normandy’s principal political and commercial centers. Viking attacks damaged the town, but the Scandinavian leader Rollo established himself there and was baptized before becoming the first ruler of Normandy. A Romanesque cathedral begun in the eleventh century was consecrated in 1063 in the presence of Duke William, soon to conquer England. Its crypt survives beneath the much larger Gothic building that now dominates the old town.

Construction in the new Gothic style began in the mid-twelfth century with the Saint-Romain Tower. A severe fire in 1200 damaged the church and city, prompting ambitious rebuilding of the nave, choir, transepts, and façade. Work continued for centuries, producing a building that combines early Gothic structure with later Rayonnant, Flamboyant, and Renaissance detail. The cathedral became a burial and memorial place for Norman rulers. Rollo’s tomb and the heart of Richard the Lionheart connect it directly with the duchy’s Anglo-Norman political world.

Rouen prospered through river trade, textiles, administration, and ecclesiastical wealth. Timber-framed houses, churches, markets, the Gros-Horloge, law courts, and narrow streets created the old town around the cathedral. During the Hundred Years’ War, English forces occupied Rouen, and Joan of Arc was tried and executed there in 1431. The cathedral’s Butter Tower rose from the late fifteenth century through funds associated partly with dispensations allowing dairy consumption during Lent. Its elaborate west front became one of France’s great late Gothic compositions.

Religious conflict, revolution, weather, and fire repeatedly altered the monument. Protestant troops damaged furnishings and sculpture in 1562. The French Revolution suppressed the chapter and briefly transformed the cathedral’s use. Lightning destroyed the central wooden spire in 1822; a controversial cast-iron replacement eventually reached 151 meters, briefly making the cathedral the world’s tallest building. Claude Monet painted the façade repeatedly in the 1890s, using changing light and weather to make the building central to modern art as well as architectural history.

Allied bombing in 1944 damaged the cathedral and devastated surrounding districts, followed by decades of restoration and urban reconstruction. Preservation of the old town retained important medieval streets while acknowledging wartime rebuilding. A small fire on the spire during restoration in 2024 was quickly controlled without major interior loss. Rouen Cathedral remains an active church within a living city, not a completed museum object. Its fabric records Romanesque foundations, Gothic ambition, Renaissance patronage, industrial-age engineering, war damage, and the continuing labor required to conserve a monument built over eight centuries.
