About Ross Hall Site

Ross Hall in Piscataway, New Jersey, served as Washington’s headquarters in July 1778 after the Battle of Monmouth. Orders issued here were associated with the army’s Independence Day celebration. The mansion is gone, but its surviving parlor wall is preserved by the nearby Metlar-Bodine House Museum.

The Ross Hall Wall is the surviving fragment of the demolished estate preserved by the Metlar-Bodine House Museum. The museum is a nearby heritage destination, and the wall’s preservation does not imply that it is presently on public display.

History happened here at Ross Hall Site

Ross Hall stood in the colonial port community of Raritan Landing. After the Battle of Monmouth, Washington and the Continental Army paused along the Raritan River in July 1778. The house became his headquarters while soldiers camped nearby. His orders for an Independence Day observance connected the property with an early military celebration of American independence.

The mansion later disappeared, but a decorated parlor wall survived and entered the care of the Metlar-Bodine House Museum. Its preservation provides a tangible link with a lost headquarters and the community around it. The surviving fragment is separate from the museum building that cares for it. The headquarters association is documented; the house has not been independently established as the venue of Charles Lee’s court-martial.
